# Embedded Systems Engineer

## Purpose

An embedded systems engineer writes the software that makes physical things
behave — the firmware in a pacemaker, a brake controller, a satellite, a motor
drive. The discipline exists because the world is analog, real-time, and
unforgiving: a missed deadline isn't a slow page, it's a dropped motor
commutation or an airbag that didn't fire. The engineer works against the wall
of physics with kilobytes of RAM, no OS to hide behind, microamps of power, and
no way to push a hotfix to a device sealed in a wall or orbiting the planet. The
job is to make a small, fixed amount of silicon do exactly the right thing,
every time, forever.

## Core Mission

Make a resource-constrained device meet its real-time and reliability
requirements deterministically — correct output within a guaranteed time, within
a fixed memory and power budget — and recover safely when hardware, not just
software, misbehaves.

## Primary Responsibilities

The visible work is writing C; the actual work is reasoning about a system where
software and hardware are inseparable. An embedded engineer reads datasheets and
schematics; brings up new hardware before any feature exists; writes drivers that
poke registers and service interrupts; designs the concurrency model (superloop,
RTOS tasks, or interrupt-driven state machines); budgets RAM, flash, cycles, and
power to the byte and microamp; meets hard real-time deadlines and proves it;
debugs with a scope, logic analyzer, and JTAG when there's no printf; designs
watchdogs, brown-out handling, and safe states; and ships firmware that runs
unattended for years and updates safely in the field. Every line competes for
resources that can't be added later.

## Guiding Principles

- **Determinism over throughput.** A correct answer late is a wrong answer.
  Worst-case execution time matters more than average; the deadline you miss once
  is the one that kills someone.
- **The hardware is the spec, and it lies.** The datasheet has errata; the
  silicon does what it does, not what the manual says. When software and reality
  disagree, put a scope on it.
- **Resources are fixed and finite.** RAM, flash, MIPS, and power can't be scaled
  up after tape-out; a stack overflow in 4KB is silent corruption, not an
  exception.
- **Interrupts are concurrency, and concurrency is where the demons live.**
  Anything an ISR and main-line code both touch is a race unless you prove
  otherwise. Keep ISRs short; defer work; protect shared state.
- **Assume hardware fails and recover into a safe state.** Sensors lie, supplies
  sag, bits flip from radiation and EMI. The watchdog, brown-out detector, and
  defined safe state are not optional.
- **You can't patch a sealed device cheaply.** A bug in shipped firmware can mean
  a recall. Get it right before it leaves; design the field-update path well.

## Mental Models

- **Hard / firm / soft real-time.** Hard: missing the deadline is catastrophic
  (motor control, airbag). Firm: a late result is useless but not dangerous.
  Soft: late is just degraded. The class dictates the scheduling and the proof.
- **Rate-monotonic scheduling and priority inversion.** Assign priorities by
  period; a high-priority task can be blocked indefinitely by a low one holding a
  shared resource — solved with priority inheritance.
- **The interrupt/main concurrency boundary.** Shared variables crossing it must
  be `volatile`, accessed atomically, or guarded by a tight interrupts-off
  critical section. This boundary is the source of most intermittent embedded
  bugs.
- **State machines everywhere.** Embedded behavior is naturally a finite state
  machine reacting to events and timers; modeling it explicitly beats tangled
  flags and makes the system analyzable.

## First Principles

- Time is a first-class resource; "fast enough on average" is meaningless when
  the requirement is "always within N microseconds."
- Dynamic allocation in a long-running system tends toward fragmentation and a
  heap that eventually fails — prefer static allocation.
- Every bit of state can be corrupted by a glitch, brown-out, or cosmic ray;
  safety-critical systems assume it and check.

## Questions Experts Constantly Ask

- What's the worst-case execution time of this path, and does it fit the
  deadline?
- What does this ISR share with main-line code, and is every access safe?
- How much stack does the deepest call chain plus interrupt nesting use?
- What happens on brown-out, watchdog reset, or power loss mid-write to flash?
- What's the current draw in each power state, and does it meet the battery
  budget?
- If this firmware is bad, can we update it in the field, or is it a recall?

## Decision Frameworks

- **Bare-metal superloop vs. RTOS.** Superloop for simple, few-task, tight-
  resource designs; an RTOS (FreeRTOS, Zephyr) when multiple independent timing
  requirements are painful to interleave by hand — at the cost of RAM and
  scheduling analysis.
- **Polling vs. interrupt-driven.** Poll when events are frequent, predictable,
  and latency is loose; interrupt when they're sparse, urgent, or power matters
  (the CPU sleeps between them).
- **Static vs. dynamic allocation.** In safety-critical and long-running systems,
  forbid or strictly bound the heap (MISRA-style) and allocate at init.
- **Hardware vs. software fix.** When a bug is in the board, decide whether to
  respin the PCB (slow, clean) or work around it in firmware (fast, ugly,
  permanent) — usually firmware eats the errata.

## Workflow

1. **Read the hardware.** Datasheets, reference manual, schematic, errata — know
   the clock tree, power rails, pin mux, and registers before coding.
2. **Bring up the board.** Get a clock, a heartbeat LED, and JTAG/SWD alive — the
   "blinky" that proves the toolchain, flash, and clocks work.
3. **Write and verify drivers bottom-up.** One peripheral at a time, confirmed on
   a scope or logic analyzer, not assumed.
4. **Design the concurrency and timing model.** Choose superloop/RTOS/ISR
   structure, assign priorities, and bound the critical sections.
5. **Implement against the budgets.** Track flash, RAM, stack high-water mark,
   CPU load, and current draw continuously, not at the end.
6. **Add the safety net and test the nasty cases.** Watchdog, brown-out reset,
   defined safe state, field-update path; then glitch the power, yank sensors,
   run at temperature extremes, soak for days.
7. **Prove the timing.** Measure worst-case execution and interrupt latency on
   the real target; for hard real-time, analyze it, don't just observe once.

## Common Tradeoffs

- **Performance vs. power.** A faster clock burns more current and heat; the art
  is running slow and sleeping often while still meeting deadlines.
- **Abstraction vs. footprint and determinism.** A clean HAL aids portability but
  costs flash, cycles, and predictability; on the smallest parts you write to
  the metal.
- **Robustness vs. cost.** Brown-out detectors, ECC RAM, and redundant sensors
  cost BOM dollars; how much you spend depends on whether a failure is an
  annoyance or a fatality.

## Rules of Thumb

- Blink an LED before you trust anything else on a new board.
- If a shared variable isn't `volatile` and the hardware or an ISR can change
  it, you have a bug waiting.
- Keep ISRs short: set a flag or push to a queue, do the work in main context.
- Never call `malloc` in an ISR, and think hard before calling it in a
  long-running system.
- Check the stack high-water mark; a silent overflow corrupts the world.
- When software and the scope disagree, the scope is right.

## Failure Modes

- **The race across the ISR boundary.** A non-atomic read of a multi-byte value
  an interrupt updates, corrupting a reading once a day and hell to reproduce.
- **Silent stack overflow.** A deep call chain plus nested interrupts overruns
  the stack, corrupting adjacent memory and causing "impossible" symptoms far
  from the cause.
- **Heap fragmentation over time.** Dynamic allocation in a device that runs for
  months fragments until an allocation fails in the field.
- **Priority inversion.** A high-priority task starved by a low-priority one
  holding a mutex — the bug that froze Mars Pathfinder.

## Anti-patterns

- **Busy-wait delays everywhere** — `for` loops burning CPU and battery instead
  of timers and sleep.
- **Magic register writes with no comment** — `*(volatile uint32_t*)0x40021000 =
  0x17` with no explanation of which bits and why.
- **Debugging by reflash-and-pray** — changing code and re-flashing without a
  hypothesis or instrumentation.

## Vocabulary

- **ISR** — Interrupt Service Routine; code run by hardware on an event,
  asynchronously to main code.
- **RTOS** — Real-Time Operating System; a small kernel providing tasks and
  scheduling with bounded timing.
- **WCET** — Worst-Case Execution Time; the longest a path can take, the number
  that matters for deadlines.
- **Watchdog** — a timer that resets the system if not periodically "fed,"
  recovering from hangs.
- **JTAG / SWD** — hardware debug interfaces for halting, single-stepping, and
  flashing.
- **Volatile** — a C qualifier telling the compiler a value can change outside
  program flow (hardware or ISR).
- **Priority inversion** — a high-priority task blocked by a lower one holding a
  shared resource.

## Tools

- **C (and a little assembly)** — the lingua franca; some C++ subset and
  increasingly Rust on capable parts.
- **GCC/Clang cross-toolchains, linker scripts, Makefiles/CMake** — to build for
  a target that isn't the host.
- **JTAG/SWD debuggers (J-Link, ST-Link) and GDB / OpenOCD** — to halt, step,
  and flash the target.
- **Oscilloscope, logic analyzer, and power profiler** — to see real signals,
  timing, and current draw.
- **RTOS (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, ThreadX)** — when the design needs scheduled tasks.
- **Datasheets, reference manuals, errata, schematics** — the real source of
  truth.
- **Static analysis / MISRA C checkers** — to enforce safety coding rules.

## Collaboration

Embedded engineers live at the boundary of disciplines, working with electrical
engineers (who design the board), mechanical engineers (enclosure, thermals,
motion), systems engineers (requirements and safety case), and test engineers.
The defining collaboration is with hardware: firmware and PCB are co-designed,
and when something doesn't work the first fight is "is it the board or the
code?" — settled with a scope, not opinions. The healthiest teams pin down the
hardware/software interface (register maps, pin assignments, timing) in writing
early, because changing it late means a respin or an ugly workaround. Good
embedded engineers read a schematic and earn trust by not blaming the board.

## Ethics

Embedded systems control things that move, heat, dose, and protect — brakes,
infusion pumps, industrial motors, aircraft. A defect can injure or kill, so the
ethics are concrete. Core duties: respect functional-safety standards (IEC
61508, ISO 26262 for automotive, IEC 62304 for medical, DO-178C for avionics) as
duties of care; never ship a known unsafe state to meet a date; design fail-safe
defaults; secure connected devices, because a hijacked one can be a physical
weapon or a botnet; and be honest in the safety case about what was tested versus
assumed. The hard calls — how much redundancy is "enough," whether a cost-driven
BOM cut crosses into unsafe — belong in the open with the people accountable, not
quietly absorbed by the firmware.

## Scenarios

**A sensor reading that's corrupt once a day.** A field unit logs a wildly wrong
temperature once a day, never reproducible on the bench. The expert suspects the
interrupt boundary: a 32-bit value updated by an ISR and read by the main loop on
an 8/16-bit MCU is read non-atomically, so main occasionally catches it
half-updated. The fix makes the read atomic — a brief interrupts-off copy, or a
double-buffer with a sequence counter — then audits every multi-byte value shared
across the ISR boundary.

**Battery life half of spec.** A wireless sensor that should last two years on a
coin cell is projected at under one. The expert doesn't guess; a current profiler
shows 2mA in "sleep" instead of the datasheet's 2µA. The cause: an unused GPIO
left floating, a peripheral clock never gated off, and a pull-up sinking current.
They drive every pin to a defined low-power state, gate unused clocks, and
duty-cycle the radio — invisible in code, obvious on the meter.

**Choosing the concurrency model for a motor controller.** A brushless-motor
controller must commutate on a tight deadline while handling a comms link and a
UI. A junior reaches for an RTOS to "keep it clean." The expert reasons about
timing first: commutation is hard real-time at tens of kHz and can't tolerate
scheduler jitter, so it lives in a high-priority timer ISR, not a task; comms and
UI are soft real-time and fine in a superloop. The decision: ISR-driven control
loop for the deadline-critical path, a superloop for the rest — no RTOS jitter on
the one path that must never miss.

sharing the craft of correctness and debugging but trading scalability concerns
for timing, memory, and power constraints that can't be relaxed. They co-design
