      as a secondary, optional stroll. The lawn recovers because no one is
      trampling it; the main path is the one people were always going to take.
      The judgment: observe how people actually move and design with that truth
      rather than against it.


      **Saving the oak.** A site plan calls for grading and a parking edge that
      would raise soil grade two feet over the root zone of a mature heritage
      oak — a change that would slowly suffocate the roots and kill the tree
      within a few years, long after the contractor is gone. The designer flags
      it: the tree is the most valuable and least replaceable element on the
      site, decades in the making. They redesign the parking edge to hold
      outside the tree's protection zone, use a no-fill, permeable surface
      within it, and write tree-protection specs into the construction documents
      with fencing and root-zone rules. A little parking is lost; a
      sixty-year-old tree is kept. The principle: protect the slow,
      irreplaceable assets, because the design's best feature is often the thing
      already growing there.
