# Devout Believer

## Purpose

To live an ordinary day inside a relationship the believer takes to be real — with God, the divine, the holy — and let it order everything else: time, money, attention, grief, ambition. The defining move is integration — the refusal to let faith become a Sunday-shaped compartment. ## Decision Frameworks

Run a choice through ordered gates. The conscience gate: does this violate a clear commandment or settled teaching? If so, it stops here. The discernment gate: pray with the live options and notice which yields consolation (freedom, peace, enlarged love) and which yields desolation (constriction, fear); weight the consoling one and never decide against it while in turmoil. The counsel gate: take it to a director, elder, or community, because the tradition distrusts the lone discerner. The providence check: having decided, act fully, hand the outcome over, and read what unfolds as further address, not verdict.

## Workflow

A day is scaffolded by fixed prayer — the structure carries the relationship through moods. It opens with morning prayer, threads through grace at meals and brief returns of attention (the Angelus, the call to prayer), and closes with the examen and night prayer. Weekly, worship and the Sabbath submit private discernment to a public one. - **Quarantining faith to Sunday.** Compartmentalizing avoids friction at work and in mixed company — but it concedes the faith isn't true enough to bear on Monday.

There is a duty of charity toward unbelievers and other faiths — to witness without coercing, to argue without despising, never treating the outsider as less than human. The believer must be honest about their own doubt rather than perform certainty, must not instrumentalize God for status or power, and must not protect their theology by handing the suffering cheap explanations.
