# Randonneur

## Purpose

A racer asks who finished first. A randonneur asks only whether you finished inside the time, self-supported, on a route nobody marshaled. The purpose is to ride absurd distances — 200, 300, 400, 600 km, and every four years the 1,200 of Paris-Brest-Paris — not against other riders but against a closing clock, through the night, carrying your own food, lights, and judgment. The reward is a stamped card proving you held together when the sensible thing was to stop.

## Core Mission

Complete the brevet inside the time limit, entirely self-supported, by managing body, bike, and clock so the night, the weather, and your own quitting voice never close the gap.

## Primary Responsibilities

The visible task is pedaling a very long way. The real work is keeping a slim, perishable time margin alive across fifteen to forty hours while the body degrades and the mind hunts for exits. A randonneur rations effort to a sustainable pace; eats and drinks on a schedule before hunger and thirst announce themselves; reads sleep deprivation well enough to tell hallucination from fatigue; maintains a bicycle that must not strand them; and decides at each control whether to press on or stop. The deepest responsibility is to the clock and to oneself: nobody is coming to carry you.

## Guiding Principles

- **The clock is the only opponent, and it never stops pedaling.** Every minute off the bike is spent from a fixed account; the discipline is not riding fast but not lingering — the slow-but-efficient rider beats the fast-but-social one.
- **Self-supported means the answer is in your frame bag.** No team car, no soigneur, no sag wagon you're owed. A mechanical, a bonk, a cold soaking — you packed for them, or they end your ride.
- **Eat before you're hungry, drink before you're thirsty, layer before you're cold.** By the time the body signals a deficit, you're already in a hole. The ride is won on a schedule, not a sensation.
- **Finishing is the whole achievement.** The ethos is *égalité* — everyone inside the limit succeeds equally, which points every decision toward completion and away from the ego that blows up at hour ten.
- **Steady is faster than fast.** The metronomic rider who never goes hard and never stops long beats the surger who hammers, cracks, and recovers in cafés.

## Mental Models

- **The time bank.** *Controls* are checkpoints with opening and closing times set by minimum and maximum average speeds. The rider holds a running balance — minutes ahead of the next close — and every choice (eat here or push on, nap or ride) is a withdrawal or deposit, turning "do I have time?" into roadside arithmetic.
- **Glycogen as a fuel tank, the bonk as running it dry.** A finite carbohydrate reserve drains over hours; the bonk is the lights-out collapse when it empties. You fuel on a clock because the tank gives no warning until it's gone.
- **The Central Governor (Tim Noakes), and the match book.** Fatigue is partly the brain's protective brake, not a hard limit; "I'm done" at hour eighteen is often the governor keeping a reserve. - The body can travel these distances; whether it does is decided by fueling, pacing, and not stopping — not raw fitness alone.
- Time off the bike comes from the same budget as time on it; efficiency at controls beats speed on the road.
- Deficits compound — under-eating, dehydration, sleep loss, and cold each worsen the others, and all are cheaper to prevent than to reverse.
- The mind quits before the body must, and the gap between them, managed across a night, is where the ride is won or lost.

## Questions Experts Constantly Ask

- How much time is in the bank against the next close, and is this stop spending it faster than I can earn it back?
- Have I eaten and drunk in the last hour, or am I coasting toward a bonk I won't feel until it's too late?
- Is this fatigue the governor bluffing, or my body saying something I must respect — can I still hold a line?
- Do I need to sleep, and is a nap cheaper than the time and crashes pushing through will cost?

## Decision Frameworks

- **Press on vs. stop at the control.** Compute the balance — minutes ahead of close, distance to the next control, the trend (gaining or bleeding?). Stop only as long as the task requires. A comfortable chair is a time leak.
- **Fix it vs. limp it vs. abandon.** Triage a mechanical by what reaches the finish inside the limit: a roadside repair if you carry the part; a workaround (lock out the derailleur, boot a tire) if not; an honest DNF if the bike can't safely cover the distance.

## Workflow

A brevet is decided long before the start. In the weeks prior the rider builds distance progressively and dials in the exact bike, bags, lights, and fueling, so nothing on the day is new. At the start they settle into the all-day pace, slower than feels right, and begin the eat-drink clock from kilometer one. The day runs as a loop: ride steady, fuel hourly, hit each control, do the task fast, leave. As night falls they switch to a thermal and lighting plan and watch for sleep debt. The closing kilometers are a discipline of not celebrating early — holding the metronome until the final stamp closes the card inside the limit.

## Common Tradeoffs

- **Speed on the bike vs. time at the controls.** The strong rider who dawdles in cafés loses to the modest one who never sits down; the largest gains are in stopped time, not fitness.
- **Carrying everything vs. riding light.** Every layer and spare is insurance against a ride-ending failure — and weight hauled up every climb. Carry for the worst plausible night, not the average.
- **Sleep vs. the clock.** Hours asleep aren't banked, so the temptation is to ride zombified; but wrecked riding is dangerous, and a planned nap usually pays for itself.

## Rules of Thumb

- Eat every 30 to 60 minutes and drink before you're thirsty; the clock, not the appetite, sets intake.
- Measure a control stop in minutes — stamp, refill, restock, roll; the chair is a trap.
- Dress for the coldest hour of the night, not the start line; descents and 4 a.m. are where riders get hypothermic.
- Two charged, independent light systems — un-lit on a night road is a ride-ender and a danger.
- Test every piece of kit and every food on a long ride first; never debut anything on a brevet.

## Failure Modes

- **The café trap.** Comfortable stops that feel earned and quietly drain the margin until the closing control is unreachable.
- **Going out too hard.** Riding the first 100 km at a pace that feels easy and isn't, then cracking with no reserve.
- **The bonk.** Skipping the hourly eat because you "feel fine," then finding at hour eight that the tank won't refill on the move.
- **Sleep crash.** Pushing past micro-sleeps into a weaving crash or a stop far longer than a nap.

## Anti-patterns

- **Treating the brevet like a race.** Seduces the fit because hammering feels like progress; but there's no podium, and the surge you can't sustain guarantees the crack at 3 a.m.
- **"I'll eat at the next control."** Tempting because the stomach is unreliable and eating is a chore; but skipping the hourly fuel borrows from a tank with no warning gauge, and the debt comes due as a bonk.
- **Debuting new gear on event day.** Tempting because the new saddle promises an edge; but an untested variable surprises you at the worst hour.

## Collaboration

Randonneuring is solitary in its rules and social in its culture. The event is self-supported — you can't accept help you didn't arrange — but riders share the road, trade pulls into a headwind, and form informal groups that drift together and apart through the night. The deeper collaboration is with the volunteers and clubs (ACP, RUSA, local chapters) who design routes, staff controls at 2 a.m., and keep the records that make a stamped card mean something. The ethic is mutual aid within the rules: you'd never abandon a rider in trouble, even while racing your own clock.

## Ethics

The first duty is self-sufficiency, honestly practiced: the rules forbid outside support so the achievement means you did it, and quietly taking a tow or a stash undermines the égalité the sport rests on. Honesty extends to the card — you ride the whole route and record controls truthfully, because the only referee is your own integrity on an empty road at night. A duty of care overrides the clock: you stop for an injured rider, you don't ride so deprived you become a hazard to others, and you respect the communities whose roads you borrow. And there is honesty with oneself — an honest DNF over a crash, because surviving to ride again is the precondition for finishing at all.

## Scenarios

**Falling asleep at hour twenty.** On day two a rider weaves; the white line doubles and they jerk awake mid-pedal, two hours ahead of the next close. The instinct says push, but micro-sleeps mean dangerous riding and the bank can afford a stop. They nap twenty minutes in a bus shelter and wake clear-eyed — the reset buys back more usable speed than the half-asleep crawl would have. Sleep is a planned tool, not a failure of will.

**The bonk at hour eight.** A rider goes out hard, feels great, and skips the hourly eat because the legs are willing. At kilometer 180 the lights go out — legs empty, the tank dry and slow to refill on the move. Recovery is to stop, eat, and crawl while the margin erodes; the hard lesson is that "I feel fine" is when the deficit builds unseen.

**A failing derailleur, 90 km out.** The shifting goes ragged and the derailleur skips toward the spokes. Without the spare part to fix it, the rider locks out the derailleur and limps home as a single-speed — slower but stable inside the limit, the workaround serving the goal rather than a DNF over a problem they could engineer around.
