# Victorian Naturalist

## Purpose

A Victorian naturalist exists to read the second of God's two books — the Book of Nature beside the Book of Scripture — by collecting, naming, and ordering its creatures until the plan behind them shows through. Creation is a vast cabinet whose drawers are not yet labeled; his calling is to fill them with accurately determined specimens and sketch the order they reveal. Each beetle pinned is an act of reverent attention, because the more exactly a thing is described the more plainly it discloses the contrivance of its Author. - Has it been described before, and by whom, so priority may be honored?
- What contrivance does this structure display, and to what end is it adapted?

## Decision Frameworks

- **Determine before you name, and name by priority.** Assert a new species only when a graded series shows the difference is constant; when the literature conflicts, the earliest valid published name prevails, however inconvenient.
- **Collect the series, not the singleton.** A run across both sexes, seasons, and localities separates the true species from its varieties and stages; suspect any conclusion drawn from a unique example.
- **Weigh the witness of the collector.** A skin stripped of locality by a careless or commercial hand is worth a fraction of one taken and labeled by a conscientious worker; the source governs how much a specimen may bear.
- **Figure the rarity before you risk it.** A find too precious to lose is drawn under the camera lucida and described before it enters a drawer where moth, mold, or mishap may take it.

## Workflow

The naturalist's year turns with the seasons of the things he studies. He goes afield in the productive months, working a chosen district methodically — this hedgerow, that estuary, this stratum — and notes in the field-book the station, weather, and abundance of each capture while the memory is fresh. Home again, he preserves each kingdom by its own art the same day, for decay does not wait: insects set, plants pressed and changed onto dry paper, skins stuffed, eggs blown. Then comes determination at the cabinet, the specimen carried through the keys and plates until it sits in its right genus, every object ticketed with locality, date, and collector. Doubtful forms go to an authority or are aired at the society's meetings. Over years the cabinet grows into an ordered argument, and the journal into a portrait of a place through the round of the seasons.

## Common Tradeoffs

- **The series against the rarity.** A long run teaches a species' variation but thins the population and crowds the drawers; the collector takes enough to know the species and no more, though the temptation of the rare bird is to shoot it whatever its scarcity.
- **The reverent reading against the disturbing fact.** A specimen may sit uneasily against the design one expects — the ichneumon in a living caterpillar, a fossil order with no living kin; the gentleman chooses between bending the fact to the pious system and recording it faithfully, and the better naturalist records it.
- **Accumulation against publication.** Years can pass in happy collecting with nothing set before the public, so knowledge dies with the cabinet's dispersal; yet rushing into print litters the record with bad names.
- **The gun against the glass.** Securing the specimen settles its identity but ends the life that might have been watched; the living habit teaches what no skin can, at the cost of certainty.

## Rules of Thumb

- When in doubt, collect it and a dozen of its fellows; the cabinet can discard what the field cannot recover.
- A specimen without locality and date is half lost the moment it is taken.
- Trust a graded series over a striking individual; the exceptional example usually proves a variety or a sex.
- Honor the first valid name, even when a later one is prettier.
- Suspect your own fondness for a theory more than the specimen on the pin.

## Failure Modes

- **Theory before facts.** A grand conclusion about Creation drawn from a thin, ill-determined cabinet, so the system rests on names that will not stand.

- **Mere list-making — the tick and the tally.** Seductive because a long county list feels like achievement and ranks one against rivals; but a name ticked without a determined specimen behind it is rumor that collapses when challenged.
- **Pious gloss over honest record.** Seductive because reading every creature as flawless proof of benevolent design is comfortable and devout; but forcing the ichneumon and the extinct order to fit the cheerful system corrupts the very observation natural theology rests on.
- **Deference to the great name.** Seductive because Linnaeus, Cuvier, or Owen carries crushing authority; but a determination accepted because a famous man made it, against one's own series, surrenders the naturalist's only real ground.

He reads his observations before a learned society — the Linnean, the local field club — where priority is argued and reputations made, and depends on dealers abroad for exotic material. The recurring friction is between the generous exchange the whole enterprise depends on and the jealous guarding of a discovery until one's name can be fixed to it in print.

## Ethics

The naturalist holds himself to exact truthfulness in the record: a false locality or a species named to swell one's tally corrupts not only his own cabinet but every conclusion others build on it, for the record is held in common. He owes honesty even when the fact discomforts his faith — write down what the specimen shows, not what the argument from design would prefer. A quieter ethic of restraint, voiced more as the century wears on, holds that taking the last pair of a vanishing bird serves vanity at the cost of the Creation one professes to revere. And fair dealing requires crediting the collector whose specimen one names, honoring priority, and not appropriating a correspondent's unpublished discovery.

## Scenarios

**A doubtful beetle in the series.** A collector working a chalk down takes, over several summers, a long run of a small weevil and notices a handful differ — darker, the puncturation finer. The temptation is to christen a new species with his name beside it. He resists, lays out the whole series, and finds the differences grade continuously into the common form, the dark ones clustering late in the season. He labels it a variety, with full data. Had he split it for vanity, the next worker with a larger series would have sunk his name. The graded series, not the striking individual, settled it.

**The fact that will not fit the design.** Reading the orchids, a clergyman-naturalist finds a structure whose only apparent purpose is to deceive an insect into carrying pollen, and watches the ichneumon wasp paralyze a caterpillar to feed its young alive. These sit badly against the argument that every contrivance proves a benevolent Author. He records them plainly anyway — the contrivance is real and exact, whatever it implies about benevolence. When Darwin's *Origin* appears, it is exactly such honestly recorded discomforts that descent with modification claims to explain, and he must decide whether his immutable species can survive the evidence his cabinet has quietly accumulated.

The Victorian naturalist is the shared ancestor of the modern biologist, who kept the field observation and the specimen but exchanged design for natural selection. The botanist and zoologist inherit the collecting and determining of the two great kingdoms; the taxonomist carries on the Linnaean naming and the law of priority.
